the job in a nutshell
To bring colour and joy to a dancer's kitchen.
Inspired by Wimbledon colours, the clients chose what initially seemed like an unusual combination: purple and green. But the mint and periwinkle (which was later announced as Pantone’s colour of 2022) is reminiscent of the jacaranda trees of Bangalore. In the large kitchen area, mint subway tiles complement periwinkle cabinetry. The smaller adjoining utility room has periwinkle tiles and mint cabinets. The cabinets are dulco-painted to match the tiles exactly. The cool pastel solids on the walls and cabinets are contrasted by black-and-white tiles with a bold circular pattern.
The original kitchen had a small attached balcony and pantry. During the remodel, the balcony was enclosed to create more space inside. An expansive window was added above the sink and counter to let in the morning light. What was previously the pantry became a utility area, with a washing machine, ironing counter, and storage for various household and gardening implements.
Built-in Bosch appliances are seamlessly incorporated into the design. Darker greys, blues, and blacks of the appliances sometimes interrupt the light greens and purples. The handle-less, self-closing drawers and cupboards contribute to the kitchen’s sleek look. There is plenty of storage available above and below ample counter space. Open shelves in the corners were designed to fit a large kombucha-brewing jar, an antique duck-shaped salt container, many cookbooks, and the clients’ teapot collection. The huge collection of magnets from around the world, on the fridge, give the kitchen another eclectic pop of colour.
A large pass-through window was carved from the wall separating the kitchen from the dining area. The pass-through can be used as a bar, snack station during parties, or for acrobatic residents to climb in and out of. At the clients’ request, Aditya Fernandes designed an abstract purple and green stained glass for the accordion window. In addition to throwing coloured light into the kitchen, this window brightens up the dining and living rooms.
From its unique colours to the inventive reimagining of a formerly cramped space, the
